Dear colleges,

Thank you for the bundles of money thou hath sent me. It is very nice and my parents are pleased. I never supposed that anyone would give me $40,000 in one go, particularly anyone who has never met me in person and so has not been exposed to my killer wit and devilish charm.

Sometimes I think higher education is the sham of all shams and who wants to live for a career anyway? However, I am supposing that taking the money and then not going to school is a surefire way to get my ass kicked by the law. So I guess I'll go to college. I guess.

I wish I could be as excited as the rest of the kids at school about getting all these nice packages from you guys. But there must be something more ahead than careers. Why learn so much for so long just for a career? Things made more sense 1,000 years ago, or I'll eat my hat. I'm starting to think that everything but art is, in the end, useless. Art (in all forms) is the only thing that survives and can still speak to the future.

....

Oh well. Celebratory lolcat?

funny pictures
moar funny pictures

Thanks again, colleges. I'll be putting that money to good use. I promise.

Sincerely,
Tap

Screw that.

Ohgod, those lolcats are gigglesnort-eliciting. I think I broke a rib at that Dr Phil one.

I really wish I could just take the money and live on it instead of going to college. I just see it as like...4 years in which you can delude yourself into thinking that you're being really worldly and learning things that you will someday use. Yeah right. Your job will probably have nothing to do with what you studied. Especially if you're an idiot like me and you go into English or history or something.

Ah. I have a soft spot for lolcats. My friend does TV in school and is making a documentary on lolcats that I have an interview in.

So when that is aired, I will finally burrow underground and live with the mole people for the rest of my life.

Hey. Hey. Hey! 1) You are no idiot. 2) I may plan on going into English. If we both go into English, we will be the two geniuses... GENII left on the planet. Hah.

And, maybe someday, Miss Rowling will allow those who write Harry Potter fic to earn money off Harry Potter fic and you'll be pocketing loads. Double hah.

You should charge your friend $500 a minute for the interview. Don't go with the mole people -- I heard there are some socially reclusive yet friendly hermits living aboveground.

I want to see that documentary, haha.

Hah. I haven't written Harry Potter fic in fo'evaaaaaa anyways. I'd have to get my ass into gear if I wanted to make money off fanfic. So I suppose I might as well just write original--I wish I could post it here so I could get input, but I'm kinda afraid of someone creeping up and stealing it. Of course, trick's on them since it would BURN THEIR EYEBALLZZZZ.

Oh lord. If I can get him to send the documentary to my computer once it's done, I think I could email it to you. Wowwww it's so weird thinking of you seeing what I really look like and stuff! Intraweb pen-palz!

D: Evil plagiarisers. I know how you feel. I've had enough of them too...

Haha, I know! I always wonder what everyone I know on the internet looks like, but I'm too scared to ask for pictures lest they think I'm an evil child molester/rapist or something. ...I'm not. Haha.

It's very strange, though, when people--usually like big pimp fic writers around here--post pictures or icons of themselves and they look noooothing like you thought they'd look. Especially after you've read hundreds of pages of their fic and assigned them a face and a personality already.

HA HA HA. That is what I plan to do.

It will take many, many years of procrastinating then not procrastinating then possibly demanding money for updated chapters a while to get to those hundreds of pages of fic, but I will do it.

...And photoshop myself into something hideous.

...HA HA HA.

Do it! That'd be great. Or you could just plagiarize Cassie Claire and bring harmony to the universe.

...I better speak softly about this. You never know, she may be watching!

Is Cassie Claire a writer? An evil one by your choice of words? XD

Oh, man! So you're one of the people who didn't read the Draco Trilogy? Cassie Claire's basically a really big fandom author who wrote miles and miles of a very long trilogy about Harry and Draco...she started it in the early days of fanfiction, before Order of the Phoenix came out, so it was very extensive and very dramatic and had some conventional pairings and some very odd ones in retrospect (Sirius/Narcissa? fuck no) and therefore she became very famous in HP fandom.

But anyway, her main controversy seems to be that she loved putting in lines from other things like Buffy and Blackadder. Most times she cited those things, so...I guess it was okay, if not very original. But some of the more obscure stuff--whole paragraphs and magical concepts--she didn't cite. So people generally criticize her for plagiarism. She is also responsible, I'm pretty sure, for the fandom version of Draco Malfoy we see now--the sexy blonde tormented by his father/Voldemort/destiny/wearing leather pants too much.

About a year back, her first book came out and you guessed it--the main love interest is a blonde warrior who turns out to have major daddy issues, some of which he didn't even know about. And the main character's name is Clary. There are a lot of similarities with Harry Potter, even some references to it (unavoidable in 'hip' urban fantasy, I suppose) XP sighhh...I can't figure out how to feel about the writer. I will say I read all of her Trilogy and both of her original booksn (which will also be a trilogy), and they were entertaining, and yeah, it's fun imagining hot people doing things, but as a work of art? Mmmm. Not so much. Plus her original stuff uses almost word-for-word passages from her fanfiction. Which I suppose isn't that bad; it's hardly her fault that the readers are familiar with the work she did online and I guess you might as well make as much money as you can for as little work. But...I dunno. Her stuff tries too hard to be trendy, in my opinion. Take away all the pop culture references, all that trendy stuff, and you're left with a dull skeleton that is as far away from a literary epiphany or awakening as possible, just a bunch of skin-deep characters obsessing over themselves. And the way she had her old fandom buddy authors, who'd already made it in the book world, pimp her out to the media just riles me. Seems like a very base, leechy way to prove yourself.

Christ, this is a fucking long comment. I hope that helped. Heh. I'd try wikipedia or some other source for a better and probably less subjective explanation. I signed up for her mailing list so I'd know when her books came out--now I get like 20 posts a day in my inbox from other members simply GUSHING over how FABULOUS her work is. So I'm just a wee bit biased. But it does give me hope--I think compared to her even I could someday be, dare I say it, profound. So maybe there's a chance of becoming a famous writer after all.

Ah! A wannabe! She must gloat daily over her cheap impersonated characters. I bet she has fantasy dreams involving Draco.

(Sirius/Narcissa? fuck no)

I cringed.

she loved putting in lines from other things like Buffy

...NOOOOO. *stabstab* That universe of original and sacred creativity could never be copied!

About a year back, her first book came out

Wait. How old is she? Is she old enough to be thought of well enough to publish a book yet immature and brainless enough to hack chunks out of other authors' work? God...

Take away all the pop culture references, all that trendy stuff, and you're left with a dull skeleton that is as far away from a literary epiphany or awakening as possible, just a bunch of skin-deep characters obsessing over themselves.

...Narcissistic characters... *gag* I gather she must be one herself. Though, that might not be possible, if she doesn't like her own work and filches from others.

So I'm just a wee bit biased.

I'M WITH YOU 9999999% OF THE WAY.

No, really, don't take my word for it. I'm just a bitter author wannabe. I get prissy when I find out someone I think is mediocre starts making it big.

As for her age, she's in her 30s I believe...it's always a little disconcerting finding out how old some ficcers are. I got into fandom when I was around 13, so I always expected that the ficcers around me were my age. When I was reading the Draco Trilogy in middle school, I imagined her as a very beautiful flighty girl around 17, because she preoccupied herself with making the characters beautiful and passionate. I think when I found out she was old and rather dumpy, her fanfiction sort of lost its allure.

That's probably very shallow of me. I dunno. I was disappointed. My imagination was offended. Hahaha.

SURPRISE!

Not.

Don't worry. If I were one, I'd be a REALLY lazy one. I'd probably ask the children to come over HERE so I wouldn't have to move around so much. Then it all wouldn't work out anyway.

Apparently there's some show on cable where they expose child molesters and stuff by luring them to places, pretending to be kids. Ironic--usually only the child molester is an adult pretending to be a child. In this case it goes both ways.

I love how we're having two different conversations in the same post.

BAHAHA. That sounds very contradictory...-ish. The police do that for MySpace as well, I think. They stick up pictures of hot anime guys for their default and draw in the weak-hearted girls. Hah.

:D Congratulations on the packets of money.

College makes things a hell of a lot easier, if nothing else. :)

Thanks. I'm sure you're right about college. I'm just so full of teenage angst and rage against authority/the machine and so the pessimism sometimes gets out.
